DIVISION OF TIME is an evening-length work for cello and player piano, with music composed by ERIC NATHAN. It was written for cellist JEFFREY ZEIGLER. It is a union of music and technology.

Division of Time is about humanity and its relationship to numbers. It is structured in ten parts, inspired by the numerals 0 through 9 and the cultural meanings ascribed to them across human history. The work speaks about life itself, tracing a path from birth to death across its ten sections. It explores the multifaceted creativity of the human spirit, weaving a dramatic arc that is thrilling and touching, complex and visceral, poetic and humorous.

Division of Time is animated by the dialogue between human and machine — one of the defining relationships of our time. The cello sings, weeps, dances and speaks with the full range of human expression; the player piano responds with computer-controlled precision, its keys moving without hands. Over the course of the work, these two voices learn from each other, push against each other, and find moments of unexpected communion. Heard in recital, the work strips the dialogue to its essence: two performers, one human and one mechanical, in intimate conversation. Division of Time invites audiences to find their own meaning in the juxtapositions it presents and fundamental questions it asks about our world, histories, and relationships, both spiritual and secular.

DIVISION OF TIME is available in a concert version for cello and player piano (Yamaha Disklavier™ or Steinway Spirio), performed by cellist Jeffrey Zeigler. This version is designed for recital and chamber music presenters and requires no additional performers or staging. It is easy to tour and available independently of the full production.
